Retail Packaging Brief for Non-Food Pet Accessories

An eight-part worksheet for pet-accessory buyers to clarify sellable units, variant quantities, inner packs, display format and sample approval before agreeing a retail packaging brief.

Illustrative concept of a pet-accessory assortment with beds, a carrier and feeding products; not an approved packaging sample.

Cover image: an illustrative pet-accessory assortment concept, not an approved packaging sample.

Before approving packaging for a pet-accessory range, define what the customer buys, how those items are grouped for shipping, and how store staff will display them. Then review a physical packaging sample against the receiving retailer's current requirements. Attractive artwork alone does not settle those decisions.

Start with the pack hierarchy

An individually sold item, an inner pack, a case and a display shipper describe different levels or functions. A display shipper is a shipping unit that also forms a self-contained display; a mixed case contains different item types. Specify the actual assortment and ask the trading partner to confirm the required identification at each level. Do not assume one barcode specification applies to every market or packaging configuration. GS1 US packaging definitions

Use this worksheet when discussing a proposed pack. The rows are suggested review fields, not a universal retailer standard.

Check the retailer's brief, not a generic label

ALDI US describes display-ready cases as packaging that can merchandise without store repacking, with attention to opening, shopping access, stability and transit protection. That is a useful concrete example, not proof that the same specification meets another retailer's requirements. Its guidance also says to send samples only when requested. ALDI US supplier FAQs

For a proposed pet-accessory program, request the buyer's current packaging instructions and record which parts of the worksheet they supersede. Keep unresolved questions visible instead of marking the whole pack approved.

Avoid an ambiguous sample approval

For example, "12 pieces per case" leaves an important question unanswered if the range has multiple colors. List the quantity of each variant, then check the sum. This is an illustrative review method, not a recommended case quantity.

One possible worksheet entry is 2 colors × 3 units of each color per inner × 2 inners = 12 units per case. That means 6 units of each color in the case. Record the actual item identifiers alongside those quantities and confirm the proposed configuration with the buyer. These numbers illustrate the arithmetic only.

When a component, assortment or artwork revision changes, identify the affected sample reference and ask the responsible buyer which checks must be repeated. Agree on that process before treating the revised pack as equivalent to the approved one.

Prepare a packaging review brief

Bring the intended market, product revision, proposed assortment, pack hierarchy, display format and unresolved buyer requirements to the next discussion. A specific brief makes the remaining decisions visible; it does not replace product testing or retailer approval.
